FINDING A BABY-SITTER
laurance--Can you get a baby-sitter for tonight?
soony--I don't know.Why?
laurance--Well,I thought we could go out for dinner and then go to a movie afterward.
soony--I can call Debbie and see if she's available.She usually doesn't like to sit during the week,but she might make an exception.
laurance--Well,do that,and then call me at the office if you have any luck.
soony--Okay,but don't get your hopes too high.It's hard to find a good baby-sitter these days.
注解:
1)baby-sitter:指临时为人照看孩子的人。美国很多女中学生、大学生课余替人看孩子,挣些零花钱。
2)sit during the week = baby-sit on weekdays
3)make an exception:做例外处理。make no exception:概部例外。
4)if you have any luck = if you are successful;也可直译为“如果你有运气能办成的话”

DON'T GET YOUR HOPES TOO HIGH
laurance--They'll never help us.You know that old saying,"You can't get blood out of a turnip."
soony--I know,I know.But that's no reason not to ask them.
laurance--We asked them last year and what did they say?
soony--actually,they didn't say anything.
laurance--Yeah.They didn't say anything and they didn't do anything.
soony--I think they might do something this year.I was talking to Gail last week and I thought I detected a more friendly attitude.
laurance--There you go with your optimism!Don't get your hopes too high!
soony--I won't,but it doesn't hurt to expect the best.Sometimes you get it!
注解:
1)turnip:萝卜。
2)Gail:人名。
3)detect:察觉。
4)attitude:态度。
5)optimism:乐观主义(态度、情绪)
6)Don't get your hopes too high.=Don't expect too much.
high是宾语补足语。high hope是“奢望”。
7)It doesn't hurt to expect for the best:it是形式主语,
不定式短语to expect for the best是真正的主语。

OUT FOR A PICNIC
laurance--Just look!The day has dawned lovely!
soony--It certainly looks clear--good day for a picnic.
laurance--I was thinking the same thing.
soony--Well,how about it then?
laurance--Okay by me.How soon do you want to leave?
soony--Say...in an hour.
laurance--Make it an hour and a half.We have to take time to get some more food,and besides that I'd like to invite Nancy and Jim.
soony--Fine.While you're getting things ready in the house,I'll go pack the car.
注解
1)dawn:(天)破晓。lovely在句中是起补足语的作用
2)clear:(天气)晴朗的。
3)picnic:野餐。
4)Say=shall we say:通常是来提建议征求对方意见。
5)make it:(固定短语)用以约定时间。如:
----When shall we meet this afternoon?
----Well, let's make it four o'clock.Is that OK?
6)pack the car:把物品装入车内。

WHERE IS IT?
laurance--I haven't the remotest idea where it is! Have you looked upstairs?
soony--Yes.And downstairs and in the basement.I've even looked in the car.
laurance--Well,the last time I saw it,it was on the table in the living room.
soony--Mother said she put it in the den,but it isn't there.At least,if it is,I can't see it.
laurance--Did you ask Harry if he's seen it?
soony--He said he didn't even know I had one.
laurance--It seems thatit will remain the mystery disappearance of the century!
soony--Unfortunately,I really need it!
注解
1)I haven't th remotest idea.=I don't have any idea.
remote:极少的;模糊的。
2)basement:地层的;地下室。
3)den:私房;地下室
4)remain=continue to be;remain是系动词,其后的成分是句子的表语。
5)mystery:神秘的,难于理解的事情。
6)century:世纪。

FEELING SICK
laurance--You look rather pal.Aren't you feeling well?
soony--Not very.I was sick most of the might .I didn't sleep very well.
laurance--What seems to be the matter?Is it the flu?
soony--No,I think it's something I ate.We ate at that new restaurant last night,and I must have eaten something that didn't agree with me.
laurance--Was it that new restaurant over on Fourth Street?
soony--As a matter of fact,it was.Why do you ask?
laurance--Because,Jerry ate there last week and had the same kind of problem.He was sick the next day,too.
soony--That's interesting.Maybe the health authorities should investigate the place.
laurance--That's what I think.Two people with similar problems in such a short time can't just be coincidence!
注解:
1)pale:(脸色)苍白。
2)Not very.=I'm not feeling very well.
3)sick:有病的,感到恶心的。
4)that didn't agree with me:与我不适的食品。这是定语从句。
5)as a matter of fact:事实上
6)health authorities:卫生当局
7)investigate:调查
8)coincidence:巧合
